Songs From Another Season
Rich Boy, Keller Williams, Coldplay, and songs from different seasons
I'm so three thousand and eight
You so two thousand and late
—Black Eyed Peas, Boom Boom Pow
What were you listening to in 2008? When you recall the music of that season, your mind will likely be flooded with the memories that accompany those songs. This week’s Bonus Track invites you to listen to some old friends and enjoy a trip down memory lane. Adam, Mat, and Kody accept the invitation by highlighting songs from a different season.
1. Throw Some D’s by Rich Boy (Adam)
The exercise of reminiscing and thinking back on music I listened to in my adolescence could take us in a million directions. Before the Lord put one Mat Alexander in my path, I exclusively listened to Hip Hop. The top 8 tracks provided by 93BLX are what I would listen to every evening. When I think about my adolescence, I think about my hometown, Mobile, AL. When I think of the music of my adolescence and Mobile, there is only one direction to go, Rich Boy. This is his only hit, but it’s our hit. Enjoy.
Also available on Apple Music.
2. Best Feeling by Keller Williams (Mat)
In 2004, I saw Keller, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and Yonder Mountain String Band at Oak Mountain Amphitheater outside Birmingham. It was such a good show. I listened to a lot of Keller Williams in late high school and early college. This whole record, and especially this song, takes me back to my freshman year of college. I don’t listen to as much Keller these days, but this song is still an absolute bop.
Also Available on Apple Music.
3. Viva La Vida by Coldplay (Kody)
Coldplay’s Viva La Vida tour stopped in OKC the night after I got married. Instead of traveling immediately for our honeymoon, we stayed an extra day to catch the show. We had listened to Viva La Vida nonstop throughout our engagement, so it was a no brainer to see Coldplay live for our first concert together. What a sweet season and what a collection of rich, happy songs to anchor those moments in our memories. I could have chosen so many tracks from Viva La Vida, but I went with something we’d all be able to sing along to.
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh

Bonus Track: Your Favorite Songs in Different Seasons by Christian Thurman
My friends, I’ve got bad news for you: it’s not 2008 anymore. However, if you were an awkward middle schooler with a killer afro like me, that might not be the worst of news.
Either way, the times have changed. The Black-Eyed Peas are no longer popular, Lil Wayne is all but retired, and saying you still listen to Graduation is a little more taboo than everyone would like (But come on, it’s Graduation we’re talking about!).
No matter what your favorite song was 15 years ago, there’s a great chance that it isn’t your favorite song today. Did the music get worse? Did it just get old? Why can’t we dust off the old records that we hold so dear and have them hit like they used to? The truth of the matter is this: we’ve grown and changed, and the songs of old have stayed the same. However, they’re not gone and dead: they’ve been forever immortalized, stowed away in the halls of fame of our hearts and minds.
Even though the songs that used to be our absolute favorites might not hold that same title anymore, the nostalgia of hearing those bangers have taken a new form. Our favorite songs greet us like old friends that we’re catching up with. We remember the songs that got us through the toughest seasons of our lives with a gratitude that cannot be expressed. We laugh and probably cringe at the songs that we used to tear up the dance floor to, knowing those moves probably should have stayed buried in the past (I’m looking at you, everyone who still Cranks that Soulja Boy). We look lovingly at our spouses as the songs that we fell in love to play softly in the background.
Even as the songs of old lose their luster, the memories of that time just get sweeter and sweeter. So take a moment, think about those songs that you thought would never get old, throw ‘emon an “oldies but goodies” playlist, and enjoy your trip down memory lane. To start you off, I’ve thrown all of those songs I couldn’t live without on a playlist. Give it a listen if you’d like! Happy Swapping. 😊

Christian Thurman is a coffee enthusiast with no musical talent whatsoever, but loves to enjoy the people who have some. He currently lives in Louisville with his wife, new baby girl, and two semi-friendly cats. He has a playlist of songs that he wants to play in his future coffee shop called “light & life vybes.” A newer artist that he has been listening to is an R&B artist named Khamari!
